An Oldie but a Goodie

Being someone who played lots of role playing games in the early 80’s I have a fondness for fantasy miniatures from around that time. I used to have a good collection of minis when I was a kid, in fact I think I had about 20 25mm figures at one stage (I know I was a hoarder even then)
Well over the past few years I’ve been collecting miniatures that I remembered owning (or ones I wanted to own) and occasionally I get them out and paint them up. Now this is always a tricky thing to do, because sometimes the quality of these old miniatures is a bit lacking and you are never sure if a blog of metal is from a tear in the mould or is meant to be something important.
Anyway back in the day I used to own a huge armoured troll figure that was swinging an axe, and a few months ago I managed to track it down and picked up an original casting on eBay. The miniature in question is ‘FTT9 Giant Half-Troll Champion in Ornate Classical Armour with Sword and Shield‘ that came out in 1981 and was sculpted by the one and only Tom Meier
I’m not sure why it was labeled as carrying a sword as it has an axe, however there are 2 straps on the back that look like they could hold a scabbard, so I wonder if the original model had a sword (I don’t ever remember there being one)
This model really didn’t disappoint and the level of detail on it stands head and shoulders above a lot of miniatures produced today, (remember its 35 years old)
when I first painted this model I did it in black armour with silver edging (enamel paint of course) but this time I’ve gone for a blue theme and used various blues and jade colours for the armour and clothing and golds on the edges.
the only problem is now its completed I’m looking at the helmet and I’m not sure if the 2 outside feathers are in fact meant to be metal wings, so part of me thinks I should repaint them
what do you think?
I’d be tempted to give him offwhite feathers on the helmet….no particular reason, just think it would be a nice contrast.
yeah the more I look at it I think a contrast colour is needed
I agree, it does need a contrasting colour. Apart from that he’s painted up really nicely.
