Happy 20th Birthday NetEpic

It’s not a secret that I am a huge fan of the Space Marine (Epic) game that GW released in the late 80’s and early 90’s, in fact I’ve blogged about on numerous occasions (See here)

In 1997 GW decided to release a new version of Space Marine to replace the classic 2nd edition game and this was known as Epic 40,000, but despite being a faster and more streamlined game it never caught on and slowly support was dropped and the game I loved disappeared.

Unlike other games Epic didn’t die off as a group of fans started a Discussion group on the old Space Marine Majordomo list and created an updated version of the 2nd edition rules called NetEpic. This happened on January 16th 1997 and today exactly 20 years (and 1 day) later we can wish a very Happy Birthday to the NetEpic project.

The original rules which are now in their 5th edition are still freely available, together with army lists and play aids at the NetEpic site http://www.netepic.org/netepic.html

There are a lot of documents on the site but I would start with the Gold edition of the core rules, they are the 5th edition but have been updated so they are not just plain text and have been made into a thing of beauty. you can download the rules by following this link NetEpic Gold Core Rules

or you can get a printer friendly version in pdf or word doc on the NetEpic link above. Also in the NetEpic Gold section of that page are army lists and unit cards for all the races.

Finally as we are talking about support for Netepic, the Tactical Command forum has an active area where the rules are discussed and has all the information you’ll ever need. it also covers other large scale sci-fi rules as well as lots more. Direct link here

Looking ahead I am now able to say that during March the Meeples and Miniatures podcast will be recording a show all about Space Marine and NetEpic where one of our guests will be Peter Ramos who is the NetEpic Coordinator and the man who has more then anyone to keep the game alive. as you could imagine I’ve very excited

to celebrated NetEpic’s 20th birthday later this week, I’m going to be dusting off my old armies and playing a game so look out for a battle report on this blog

Did you ever try epic Armageddon?

Yeah and its a good game, but the only downside to it was I felt I was playing Epic-lite as the scale wasn’t there (i.e. the armies were a little too small for me)

I might dig it out again and have another game soon, just to get a feel for it

I have a big soft spot for Epic of all kinds, so great news to hear you’re doing a review. I’d really recommend you do give Epic Armageddon another try as I think it’s one of GW’s best ever games. It doesn’t quite have the nostalgic appeal and all the crazy detail of Space Marine, but is a very tactical and fun war game that borrows from Epic 40k but doesn’t take the streamlining anywhere near as far. Looking forward to the episode!
