The UK Games Expo – Part 2 – The Purchases

ok it’s time for the confessional (we now call it on Meeples and Miniatures, although it was nicked from Simon Mayo’s radio 2 show)

so there I was trapped in a gaming convention for 3 days and it was obvious that things would be brought, but was probably not expected was what I would buy, but lets start at the top

Wargame Related:

Normally this would be the biggest section, but this time and it probably shows how my gaming has changed recently. for possibly the first time ever my gaming purchases can be displayed in one small image

this is a scenery piece from Oathsworn Miniatures, some MDF from TTCombat and some models from Atlantis Miniatures, actually one of those models is also a present from Shaun so doesn’t count as a purchase. (thanks Shaun that was really kind of you)

Boardgames:

again this would normally be a huge section of my purchases, but oddly its not this year with only 1 purchase

Istanbul was the boardgaming hit of the show for me, great mechanics, simple to play and really deep. I got the core game with Supplements for £34 and it was a real bargain

Role Playing:

Normally this section would be empty, but over this last year I have been listening to the Grognard files and long suppressed urges have been crawling up into my mind. so I thought it was time I got back into Role Playing, I started off by picking up some classics from Chaosium as Runequest is looming large in my mind

I got the quick start guide to the new version of Runequest, plus some reprints of some very early booklets and topped it off with Heroquest, in case I wanted to try a different slant on playing games in Glorantha

then I decided to investigate a game I’ve heard so much about but never played, so whilst I was at Chaosium I got the quick start guide to Call of Cthulhu 7th edition and a solo adventure to try out the rules

at that point I moved away from Chaosium before I blew my entire wages on them and went for a coffee, it was there I bumped into my mate Paul and during our chat he mentioned he had seen Tunnels and Trolls on the Leisure games stand 5 mins later I had this beautiful tome in my hands (and it is a tome as it has over 350 pages in it)

now that was me done, I had some Runequest, Call of Cthulhu and Tunnels and Trolls so there was no need buy anything else

then we visited EDRPG stand to look at their battlecard game based on Elite Dangerous, whilst the rest of the guys were drooling over the card game I was busy chatting to the owner about the RPG games they have and yes I decided to pick it up as it would scratch that Sci-fi itch I never knew I had

that was Friday

Saturday I walked passed the Cubicle 7 stand and was attracted by one of their games called ‘The One Ring’ this is an RPG set in middle earth 5 years after the Hobbit book. I had a long chat with the owner about the mechanics and picked up a couple of books to start me off

on Sunday I returned and brought a couple more

the good people at Cubicle 7 also gave me a set of very pretty dice for the game

Footnote:

so it’s fair to say I have RPG’s in my sights for the rest of this year and Runequest and hopefully One Ring should be the ones to get to the table very soon

oh once I got home I also brought the PDF of the new 7th edition of Runequest, just because I think it’ll come in useful

Or maybe your wargame purchases show just how many miniatures you have been painting for MIddle Earth this year which is reflected in your selection in RPG’s as well :-). Remember you can play One ring on Google Hangouts as well!
